#10 Understanding Your 'Characters' with Director Kevin Richardson
On this episode of Getting Goosebumps: The Power of Storytelling, I’m joined by producer and director Kevin Richardson, who has worked with huge organisations such as Disney and has impressive experience with interactive storytelling. From finding passion in your stories, to learning from your mistakes…he has plenty of insight to share.
Passion in storytelling
Storytelling definitely isn’t always fun and games. Sometimes you might struggle to connect to a story.
Kevin discusses how you can’t always guarantee to start with a story you’re passionate about…but this can change over time as you consider the feelings of the people.
Identifying with characters
Identifying with characters or personas can be another tricky part of storytelling.
We chat about the best way to understand and empathise with the struggles of a character and how their conflicts can feel more ‘real’ to you.
Jump the ship like a rat!...
We discuss how to handle big mistakes and what you can learn from them in the long term. Sometimes starting a project doesn’t mean you want to finish it, especially if it’s not going in the direction you had in mind.
So Kevin advises why sometimes it’s okay to “jump the ship like a rat” and leave!
Do you agree with what Kevin has to say or do you have any questions for him? Let us know in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you.
