Gideon The Cutpurse by Linda Buckley-Archer
253gideon First in a trilogy, this book sparkles with great dialogue, wonderful pace and
high adventure. The time travel angle lends fun to an impeccably researched and
rendered historical novel.
The London Eye Mystery by Siobhan Dowd
254london In the mould of A Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night Time,
Ted brings his unique perspective to bear in the search for his missing cousin.
Wonderful stuff, suitable for ages eight to eighty-eight.
Catkin by Nick Green
255cat Ben and his mother are in danger of being thrown out on to the street by a
ruthless landlord. Tiffany is neglected by her parents. Both children find solace
in the study of a martial art based on catlike movements. But “pashki” turns
out to be more than merely a physical discipline. It bestows supernatural
abilities, which come in handy when Ben and Tiffany discover a sinister plot
linked directly with the problems in their lives.
Shadow Forest by Matt Haig
256shadow Samuel Blink is the hero of this story, but he doesn't know it yet.
Right now, he and his sister Martha are in the back of his parents car.
He has no idea a giant log is about to fall from the sky and change his
life forever. He doesn't know that he and Martha will be forced to move to
Norway and eat their Aunt Eda's smelly brown cheese. He hasn't the slightest
clue Martha will disappear into Shadow Forest. It is a forest full of one-eyed
trolls, the sinister huldre-folk, deadly Truth Pixies and a witch who steals
shadows - a forest ruled by the evil Changemaker. It is a forest so dangerous
that people who enter never return. No. Samuel Blink doesn't know any of this.
So don't tell him. It might ruin the book ...
Jupiter Williams by S. I. Martin
257jupiter Fabulous novel about a little known aspect of nineteenth century
London - its black population. It's a journey of discovery for Jupiter,
who is a horrible little snob, but somehow an endearingly unreliable narrator.
The true heroes are his brothers, if only he knew it. Great stuff.
Hybrids by Daniel Thorpe
258hybrids A thrilling sci-fi novel set in a believeable - and terrifying - near future. Johnny Online and Kestrella are hybrids - victims of "Creep", a pandemic sweeping the country which causes sufferers to merge with items of technology when over-exposed to their use. Kestrella persuades a wary Johnny to help her find her missing mother, but the Gene Police have other plans for him...Powerful, compelling, and narrated alternately by Johnny and Kes, it questions our human dependence on technology, and our reactions in the face of nationwide panic.
