A Sugar Sweet Start for "Google Dave"

DAVE HAZLEHURST is a director at Liverpool internet marketing agency, Ph Creative. He lives in Wallasey with wife Ali and their two children, Louie, aged four, and Ellie, 21 months. This is an account of his day.

6am: Wake up to Clint Boon’s “White No Sugar”, and Louie has ended up in our bed. With Ali now in his, it’s like musical beds in our house. Need to get a move on as off to BNI (early morning networking group) breakfast meet.

6.45am: Enjoy network meet, where I am handed some referrals and receive some back, one interested in Pay Per Click advertising and one for a website – makes getting up early feel so worthwhile. 8.50am:Catch up with the Ph Creative team in our morning huddle. What strikes me since moving in-house is the talent within the team and how they always find a creative solution to challenges – inspiring.

9.15am: Catch up with emails and messages – the most of which are asking for ”Google Dave” – this was started by my colleague Bryan and seems to have stuck.

10.30am: Conference call with a major retailer. We’ve been working with it on its online recruitment strategy and so far we’ve had fantastic results, taking its average cost per hire down by 25%.

11.20am: Great meeting with Bryan around business development. Something big is going to happen – that’s all I can say.

12.30pm: Working lunch – grab a sandwich and check emails and messages. Check out the blogs I follow to keep abreast on any new best practice, changes in how Google ranks websites, industry news.

1pm: Insight management – with the internet, you can track everything, so we need to be close to the numbers to ensure our clients maximise their return on investment. Online marketing is both a science and an art. How to understand the data is crucial, but knowing how to influence it is what makes you stand out and improve your profit. It’s not the tools you use, but how you use them that counts.

2.30pm: Meeting with a client who works in IT support. We’re looking at how we can improve their online visibility and integrate their blog with social networks like Facebook & Twitter.

3.15pm: Meet with Hope Street Hotel. Their new website is live, our design team have done a superb job; next, the London Carriage Works.

4.10pm: Review clients’ campaigns and begin to build a Pay Per Click campaign for a particular client. Research and structure of this is critical to maximise return on investment.

5pm: Training workshops for our clients, which we run twice monthly. We discuss with them how to get the most from their “online estate” and make sure that each client goes home with one great idea that will make a difference to their business.

7.30pm: Get back in time to see Ellie go to bed. Louie wants to build something with his Lego – so on comes the hard hat and we build a space base. He tells me he’s won a gold medal on the Wii for the Javelin – so it’s Wii Olympics this weekend – must get some practice in.

8.30pm: Bite to eat with Ali, and a glass of wine, catch up on 24 (thank God for Sky Plus).

10.30pm: Off to bed, everyone’s where they should be. But, as I drift off, I wonder what theme tune musical beds will play to tonight.

The BT Convention centre is the highlight this month where Google Dave will be speaking along side Bryan Adams and Richard Waters in what is the most anticipated seminar this year called Attract, Capture, Engage.
